Continuing Education- Sage Demo Day

Yes, this time of the year is warm enough that the vendors come out and let us play with their cache of rods, some we all have heard of, and then there are some we will be hearing of during their traditional new product roll out cycle.

The whole Fly Fishing Shop staff came out on such glorious day on the Sandy to extend their hands-on experience with Sage's rod lineup. Although most line setups revolved around Skagit, there were also Scandi, Long Belly, Mid Belly, and Switch nymphing lines. We played around with rods from 11' all the way to 15'.

It was unanimous we thought one prototype rod coming out in August stood out as the new kid in the block we all will enjoy and feel comfortable having in our quiver.

Green Drakes

Well if you are in the know then June is the time for Green Drakes. Nymphs, emerges, and dries all taking fish when fished at the correct time. The most impressive thing about these Drakes we have is the size, like sausages with wings these bad boys get noticed. If you have never seen a Green Drake now is the time check it out, and enjoy.

Free Casting Day gets bigger every year!! Next year will be even better!!

The 2014 Sandy River Spey Clave has come and gone. I am going to say the best attended and best represented Clave yet. This year there was more to do, see and try then ever before. The tying sessions were a hit as well as the hand out that contain all the sponsers and infomation about the schedual of events both on water and in the theater tent. The free casting again was amazing, for everyone involved. If you have never attended this gathering then you are missing out, the Clave has become a staple event in the Northwest and I would say any persons interested in spey casting expert of beginger can and does benifit from the Sandy river Clave. My pronise is that next year we will try to improve and make the event bigger and more enjoyable.

Heavy water sometimes provides nice trout.

Now to the good stuff. The Deschutes trout fishing has been steady...I am not saying stellar or out of this world. The trout have seen alot of flies and something different would help to change the game. The Salmon fly hatch is always this way. Now toward the later half of the hatch progressivly grown hatches of Caddis and Mayflies are becoming more and more pervilent. The trout are seeing the ouportunity not to be hooked by changing their eating habbits this year. The lower water than normal, this has moved the fish more wide spread over the surface area of the river. I would also recomend longer leaders and lighter tippet. Yep Winter Steelhead or Winter Trout.

 Depending on what weather your getting the fishing can be awesome. I have been out for both trout and Winter Steelhead and have been finding success with both. The Steelhead are around and showing themselves to those willing to work, but you wont be alone on the river. With all this nice weather the urban rivers have been busy.


You cant catch Winter Steelhead if you don't get out there. Fish are being caught from the coast to the Urban rivers of Portland. The day you chose is everything.

Odd winter weather has lead to some great trout fishing!

On the East side the trout fishing has been very productive. Nymph fishing and dry fly fishing have been options on both the trips out on the Deschutes lately. Fish responded well to a variety of flies, time of day was more important. The Crooked river has been on fire and our very own Dave is there now so more info to come. Hope everybody has had a great start to their year!!!

The Weather is turning and tying flies is looking like a good option.... for a little while anyway

Well the holiday season is in full swing and days spent shopping or inside doing family stuff like eating dinners with way to many calories. If you are going to be stuck in this perpetual state of way to full, then find a comfy chair and be creative in this less than motivating state of mind. The shop has tons of fly tying stuff for all your trout, Steelhead, or saltwater needs. With new stuff headed our way right now, this is the place to get your fly tying muse motivated.

I have been out there lately and can tell you there are still fresh Summer Steelhead showing up in Most of the rivers east of Welches and 2014 is not to far away now. Steak and Eggs takes another late season chromer!!

Well I can tell you in the last 2 weeks the fly to have on the Deschutes, JD, and Grande Rhonde. Is the Steak and Eggs. As the water gets colder the bigger flies are better, but I like to cast flies that are light. The Steak and Eggs is the fly to use easy to cast  even on a single handed rod. and with the rivers containing spawning salmon the trialling egg is a double kicker. Steak and Eggs pick a few up and you can try them for yourself.

Up to Date Fishing Report 10/21/2013

Even at the shop we are finding them.

 

Well the week of variable water heights is calmed down and back to stable. Steelhead should be finding the proper holding water again. Trout fishing has been out standing as well. Small Baetis, and Mahogany Duns are out and the nymphs are in full swing. Small stone fly and cased caddis nymphs as droppers.

The Cascade lakes are still producing well and will get better the closer we get to not being able to access them. the Salmon river is only open for 10 more days, so get your time in while you can. the upper stretch above final falls is fishing really well for brookies too!!

Now is the season and with these warm days we are having get in and asking where to fish. Hope to see you all soon.

Fish are on the move!

Well that high water last week got the fish moving! Now that the river is back in shape be ready!!! Steelhead numbers are down but you wont catch them if you don't go. Also I personally have seen an increase in the average size of the fish lately. The bulk of the fish are going to be above Maupin.

This is about the time I start using 10 lb. tippet, just in case. On another note the October Caddis are out thick. The trout love the nymphs as well as the sporadic Mahogany Dunns you will see. some regular caddis stuff around too. Hatches have been in the warmest part of the day so keep the dries ready.

Wading boots are kind of a BIG deal.

Well being fishing twins with your wife is a super cool thing, right. The reason is the guide model simms boots are the best.
